The rest of the meeting went down without incident, although I felt vindicated by the fact that I had completed not one, but two difficult contracts this week, besides the other eight more basic ones. It had been quite the busy week, and a very successful one at that.

My feeling of triumph was quickly stomped into the ground when I returned to my office and found Viveca perched in one of the chairs. The black-haired succubus was not trying to hide what she was right now, staring at me with her eyes black as two pools of obsidian. As always, her olive skin tone had that glow that had nothing to do with the sun or healthy nutrition—demons didn’t quite do the clean eating routine most of the time—and I felt the familiar, almost gravitational pull toward her as I walked to my desk chair.

Her lips quirked up for a moment in amusement, but I didn’t react. It was a fact that very few people were completely straight on the spectrum of sexual preferences, and any kind of sex demon drew reactions like that. Unlike most, Viveca just didn’t act on them a lot.

“Nice shoes,” I noticed, trying to pretend that the stirring of lust low inside my body had more to do with her accessories than the woman herself.

“Oh, you know, skinned a couple of imps to get them,” she responded in her low, sultry voice that spoke of cigar smoke and rich whiskey. One thing was for sure—she might look like she’d barely left twenty behind, but she certainly didn’t sound it.

“Definitely worth the trouble,” I agreed, then wondered if that had been a figure of speech or honesty. The Embassy made sure to be all up in vampire and werewolf business, but the other species mostly opted to stay away from us to preserve their long-standing traditions of privacy; demons were the worst of them, although a fair share of incubi and succubi dropped in on a semi-regular basis. As Viveca herself had let me know in no uncertain terms, unless she sucked the living soul out of some guy right in front of me, I had no business telling her what to do, or to refrain from.

I made a point of not finding any clients for her who were averse to getting it on in front of an audience.

“What brings you to my office this fine afternoon?” I asked, hoping that she wasn’t on the prowl for her next victim.

“Actually, I’m here to do you a favor.”

“Really?”

Now that was new.

“Really,” she replied, giving me a grin that was nothing if not feral. “Any day now you’ll get a new client, and when you do, you will think of me.”

“Could you be any less vague?” I prompted, already feeling frustration leak back into my relaxed mind.

“Ask your secretary,” Viveca chimed, then got up.

Just looking at her perfect curves in that perfectly cut dress made me want to do things I really was too smart to engage in, and when I sent her a nasty glare, she immediately toned it down.
